ON A MANHATTAN ROOF, by ANNETTE WILCOX First Line: I've been on a sea voyage Last Line: Of car and voice and feet. Subject(s): Cities; Life; New York City; Urban Life; Manhattan; New York, New York; The Big Apple | ||||||||
I've been on a sea voyage Through a dead city. Buildings blurred Webbing earth and sky together tenuously. Light. . . and moving shadows cross them. These no sturdy mortals at their nightly toil, But mystic weavers of an ancient fate, Endlessly performing strange and devious things. There is a life here . . . There's a pulse and beat, muted deep A spun-together rhythm Of car and voice and feet. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...READY FOR THE CANNERY by BERTON BRALEY TRANTER IN AMERICA by AUGUST KLEINZAHLER MEETING YOU AT THE PIERS by KENNETH KOCH FEBRUARY EVENING IN NEW YORK by DENISE LEVERTOV ON 52ND STREET by PHILIP LEVINE THREE POEMS FOR NEW YORK by JOSEPHINE MILES NEW YORK SUBWAY by HILDA MORLEY |
