THERE have been gorgeous moments, hours and days,
Dogs by creek waters romping, trees and a rose;
Music in light where the delphinium grows
And bees make audible the summer haze.
Wanton adventurings in unknown ways
Of hill and sea, passions of fresh repose
'Mid raptures where devouring eyes ne'er close
And no lips move except to laugh or praise.

Vivid enough these were but all are passed
Into a cloud of recollected things;
Often again will wonder come and grace;
With corded magic 'neath their loosened wings
Strange outland ships will hail -- to be at last
Drowned under the slow surge of commonplace.
