He was so smiling and so debonair That last gay night, And going with a brief, -- "So long!" He passed from sight. Death must have loved his eager, dancing eyes, His spun-gold hair, Death must be weary of drab forms, Dull-eyed with care. Still innocent and smiling to the last He took her hand, And with unwavering trust he faced A strange, new land. And now each casual word he said, becomes A precious thing, Each deed has rich import, with love Remembering. "So long!" He called so merrily that night . . . So long the years For her who loved him, and was left Alone with tears. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
