GENIUS LOCI, by MARGARET LOUISA WOODS Poet's Biography First Line: Peace, shepherd, peace! What boots it singing on? Last Line: And careless pass him by whose is the gift divine. Alternate Author Name(s): Woods, Mrs. Margaret Louisa Bradley | |||
PEACE, Shepherd, peace! What boots it singing on? Since long ago grace-giving Phoebus died, And all the train that loved the stream-bright side Of the poetic mount with him are gone Beyond the shores of Styx and Acheron, In unexplored realms of night to hide. The clouds that strew their shadows far and wide Are all of Heaven that visits Helicon. Yet here, where never muse or god did haunt, Still may some nameless power of Nature stray, Pleased with the reedy stream's continual chant And purple pomp of these broad fields in May. The shepherds meet him where he herds the kine, And careless pass him by whose is the gift divine. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A BALLADE OF THE NIGHT by MARGARET LOUISA WOODS A LAST WALK TOGETHER by MARGARET LOUISA WOODS A MAY SONG by MARGARET LOUISA WOODS A SONG OF HOME-COMING by MARGARET LOUISA WOODS A WOMAN'S APOLOGY by MARGARET LOUISA WOODS AN EASTERN LEGEND by MARGARET LOUISA WOODS APRIL by MARGARET LOUISA WOODS AT THE BARRICADE by MARGARET LOUISA WOODS DEDICATION TO 'A VILLAGE TRAGEDY' by MARGARET LOUISA WOODS EVISA: A SKETCH IN CORSICA by MARGARET LOUISA WOODS |
