With smile just a little bit sweeter, And hair just a little more gray, Step just a wee bit slower Than it was when I went away Come when the stars of evening Shine from a cloudless sky, With voice just a bit more gentle Sing me your lullaby. Smoothe out my wrinkled forehead Banish away the pain, Clasp me a bit more closely, Call me your child again; Out of the years that have glided Over a rocky steep, Ever your tones will lull me Into a dreamless sleep. Come from the voiceless silence When the evening sun is low, Guide my wayward footsteps As they patter to and fro, And I'll see your smiling visage Shine out from each bright star And I'll love you, love you, love you, I'll love you wherever you are. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE THREE CHILDREN by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN CHILDREN SELECTING BOOKS IN A LIBRARY by RANDALL JARRELL COME TO THE STONE ... by RANDALL JARRELL THE LOST WORLD by RANDALL JARRELL A SICK CHILD by RANDALL JARRELL CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS ON THE DEATH OF FRIENDS IN CHILDHOOD by DONALD JUSTICE THE POET AT SEVEN by DONALD JUSTICE |
