RECOMPENSE, by JACK GREENBERG First Line: If after years of effort and desire Last Line: The ecstasy that love alone can grow. Subject(s): Love | |||
If after years of effort and desire Came peace as came the joy of having you, I'd gladly meet whatever time require And deem it ample pay for striving through; If Rachael owned half the charm and treasure You possess, indeed twice the fourteen years That Jacob toiled would be scanty measure As recompense for what finds no compeers. Through the seasons rising yet before us I ask for nothing better than to share The happiness that your being bore us With every living body, everywhere. I want the entire world to feel and know The ecstasy that love alone can grow. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INVENTION OF LOVE by MATTHEA HARVEY TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS A LOVE FOR FOUR VOICES: HOMAGE TO FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN by ANTHONY HECHT AN OFFERING FOR PATRICIA by ANTHONY HECHT LATE AFTERNOON: THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE by ANTHONY HECHT A SWEETENING ALL AROUND ME AS IT FALLS by JANE HIRSHFIELD |
