DESPAIR, by
First Line: What have I missed?
Last Line: My days unceasing pain?
Subject(s): Despair

What have I missed?
What duty all important
Have I passed by?

I cannot think of any crime,
Of any injury more, than casual,
Of any great unkindness;
Yet I die!

It must have been a something great,
So great I could not miss it—
But I did.
It must be that my sin is great:
God's face is hid.

How have I failed?
What duty not made plain
Has made my nights an anguish,
My days unceasing pain?
