First Line: The darkness of night is broken
Last Line: Than complete release from pain?

The darkness of night is broken
By quivering flashes of pain.
Succeeding the glare
Comes black despair,
Like gusts of chilling rain.

Oh, life, of whom I asked so much
Of work and toil and gain,
Could you or heaven itself give more
Than complete release from pain?
