INTERLUDES; TO DIDEROT: 3, by
First Line: Sensible vibrating strings, when the forefinger blocks
Subject(s): Diderot, Denis (1713-1784)

sensible vibrating strings, when the forefinger blocks
a keyboard of sensations, diapason and silence.
in the humid basement of a now spent pleasure,
drafts and whispers, the age of enlightenment comes to life
in the glow of an oil-lamp, in tangles of silk
in rainbows of ribbons resounding by dint of color.
chance also burned, candle-wick restless
in its shadows, stirring from the dust infinite presences
forced onto the stairway of matter, void after void.
all is full, you know, from plankton to the platter
that in a ray of light bears the head of the saint.
the magma swells against us, you've tried too hard,
between one meteor and the next, to find a reason, love.
shining dream, form, peace, sense, sentiment
has ceased the eruptions and implosions, from measure to measure
of this our life: smile at me, at least, O summit
of nature, before all in us returns to inert matter.
