I lay last night and watched for Death: I thought that he would come with stealthy step, With sweeping robes of dingy black And greedy hands, strong and cold and thin. I thought that he would clutch my heart And take it with him swiftly through the dark. He came instead at break of day, With Dawn, a gentle nurse all clothed in gray, Who held the curtains wide for me to see The way that I must go. She fanned my fevered breath With morning air and bathed my brow with dew, And looking up, I saw that Death was robed in blue! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND ANTIQUE BIBLE by KATHRYN DUDLEY |
