Caged fragileness of golden song, The whining shell, a war day's long Shrieking dirge, heeds not your chanterelle. The groan of wounded courage Voices hell. Your sweet-toned pearls of rhapsody Are threaded on a string of pain Across a sky of hate. The reign Of Death demands the ultimate. And suddenly your silence flows to death's untimely tryst. Your muted song has told of the approach of yellow mist. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
