First Line: The stars stop
Last Line: That the big-hatted gods of the mesa live again.


The stars stop.
The game cock calls out the last watch
And the ranch house answers back the hour
With four lighted windows.

Morning looks across thorn-covered arroyos.
Fleeing shadows hide in the valleys.

Wild cows and their wilder calves
Sniff the air and listen...
Because the corrals have spoken
And iron-footed steeds tell the stones
That the big-hatted gods of the mesa live again.
