LINES TO LOVE, by BERNIECE GRAHAM First Line: My dear, you did not need to let me go Last Line: Yet never did you call me back to you! Subject(s): Envy; Love | ||||||||
My dear, you did not need to let me go. Did you not know that love, like tides, must change -- Must move in constant, endless ebb and flow? Had you not guessed you were my moon and sun, My love a tide, when all is said and done, Which must flow back to you? Love is so strange . . . So like a heap of shining golden sand That lies in shimmering warmth about the feet Yet slides quick-running from the jealous hand. You did not need to let me go, my own. Deep in your heart you knew that you alone Could stem the tide that ran so swift to meet The tryst with other gods. Oh, this you knew, Yet never did you call me back to you! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INVENTION OF LOVE by MATTHEA HARVEY TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS A LOVE FOR FOUR VOICES: HOMAGE TO FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN by ANTHONY HECHT AN OFFERING FOR PATRICIA by ANTHONY HECHT LATE AFTERNOON: THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE by ANTHONY HECHT A SWEETENING ALL AROUND ME AS IT FALLS by JANE HIRSHFIELD |
