SHEEP, by
First Line: The seconds drift like sheep that shepherd lack
Last Line: Will white-fleeced sheep drift everlastingly.
Subject(s): Sheep

The seconds drift like sheep that shepherd lack,
Between the wires of the fence of time,
Leaving the wool of memory, white and black,
To bleach upon the barbs while seasons climb.
And hearts resign and shrivel into dust
And creeping things destroy the outworn garbs,
But still the ageless fences never rust
And still the wool entangles on the barbs.
And ere the circling sun of circling tires,
And ere the moon has lost her minted sheen,
Will sheep forever drift between the wires
And memory-wool upon the barbs be seen.
And through the fences of eternity
Will white-fleeced sheep drift everlastingly.
