BEAUTY NEAR AT HAND, by ELLEN G. HILLEBOE First Line: Thank god for gift to realize the wealth Last Line: Thank god for so much beauty near at hand! Subject(s): Beauty | ||||||||
Thank God for gift to realize the wealth Of beauty near at hand, the charming views And bits of loveliness at every turn; To feel the thrill of changing sunset hues And harmony of sombre blues and grays At dusk; discern where fairy fingers wrought In lavender to veil denuded beech And hung the purple canopy they brought To mark a distant lake or stream; to catch The message of the trees in bold design Against a winter sky; to understand The transformations planned in every line From tiny seed to flower and fruit, from egg To lacy wings and gaily painted things.
