LOVE ENTERS MEEKLY AND GOES, by JOSEPH HOFFMAN First Line: And here rushing, building Last Line: Love enters meekly and slinks in a corner. Subject(s): Love | |||
And here rushing, building -- Building? -- A name, an institution, a fortune... Love enters meekly and goes to a corner. Who can understand? Light words seem somehow heavy and forced, The tongue will not roll And laughter rumbles deep, trapped -- Dissonance in a wild torrent, The calculated music of avarice and greed Sweeps peace and beauty down and under... What can we think? How can we hear The music of peace and love? We sacrifice to the god of our puny greatness, Crush all men, climb over and above them, Lunge and plunge in our sleep, Or be swept under... Love enters meekly and slinks in a corner. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INVENTION OF LOVE by MATTHEA HARVEY TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS A LOVE FOR FOUR VOICES: HOMAGE TO FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN by ANTHONY HECHT AN OFFERING FOR PATRICIA by ANTHONY HECHT LATE AFTERNOON: THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE by ANTHONY HECHT A SWEETENING ALL AROUND ME AS IT FALLS by JANE HIRSHFIELD WHEN WE HOLD EACH OTHER by JOSEPH HOFFMAN DEATH'S JEST-BOOK: SAILORS' [OR MARINERS'] SONG by THOMAS LOVELL BEDDOES |
