TO BETSY AGED THREE, by
First Line: How often have I seen thee in thy mother's arms
Last Line: In meanings half-divine.
Subject(s): Children; Childhood

How often have I seen thee in thy mother's arms,
Thy agony unstilled,
Thy hearing flooded with the outward sounds
That filter dimly through the common ear!
And now, in music's wordless speech,
Thy little fingers seek
To grasp the tenuous patterns
Of a structure deep in consciousness.
The aspirations of the timeless years
Arise within thee
To touch the inner silences articulate
In meanings half-divine.
