TO BETSY AGED THREE, by STELLA M. HOOGS First Line: How often have I seen thee in thy mother's arms Last Line: In meanings half-divine. Subject(s): Children; Childhood | ||||||||
How often have I seen thee in thy mother's arms, Thy agony unstilled, Thy hearing flooded with the outward sounds That filter dimly through the common ear! And now, in music's wordless speech, Thy little fingers seek To grasp the tenuous patterns Of a structure deep in consciousness. The aspirations of the timeless years Arise within thee To touch the inner silences articulate In meanings half-divine. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE THREE CHILDREN by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN CHILDREN SELECTING BOOKS IN A LIBRARY by RANDALL JARRELL COME TO THE STONE ... by RANDALL JARRELL THE LOST WORLD by RANDALL JARRELL A SICK CHILD by RANDALL JARRELL CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS ON THE DEATH OF FRIENDS IN CHILDHOOD by DONALD JUSTICE THE POET AT SEVEN by DONALD JUSTICE KAPIOLANI CONTRASTS by STELLA M.
