THE MONKS, by CLAUDE HOUGHTON Poet's Biography First Line: Amid the mist-hung cloisters of my soul Last Line: And praise thy hallowed name in endless prayer. Subject(s): Love; Memory; Monks; Prayer | ||||||||
AMID the mist-hung cloisters of my soul, Pass all my thoughts like monks in sackcloth clad, With heads downcast and ardent eyes that scan The breviary of love, or slowly tell The holy beads of memory's rosary. Day-long they pass in meditation rapt And when the veils of night enshroud the world, Prostrate they lie within their silent cells Before the solemn mystery of Love, And praise thy hallowed name in endless prayer. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN LISTEN, LORD: A PRAYER by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON A PRAYER FOR THE FUTURE by GEORGE BARLOW (1847-1913) DIFFERENT WAYS TO PRAY by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE PRAYER DURING A TIME MY SON IS HAVING SEIZURES by SHARON OLDS WE WHO PRAYED AND WEPT by WENDELL BERRY PRAYERS AND SAYINGS OF THE MAD FARMER by WENDELL BERRY CHANT D'AUTOMNE by CLAUDE HOUGHTON |
