(To Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd) No friend was near to share his solemn day, No cheery smile nor listening ear to praise. Alone lived Admiral Byrd, midst freezing winds, Sharp driven snow, while through the long night's hell In fury moaned the grim crevasse. He gave Himself where others would have tried but failed. From out the parka's fold brave eyes led on That dauntless soul, undimmed through pain, fatigue Near death. One leading goal was in his mind, To find the truth of earth's uncharted main; While comrades' love reached over frozen wastes To cheer his soul and warm his icy world. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE OLD MEN by WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS STRANGE HURT [SHE KNOWS] by JAMES LANGSTON HUGHES THE ROSE (2) by CHRISTINA GEORGINA ROSSETTI THE FLOWERS OF THE FOREST by ALISON RUTHERFORD ROMANCE by WALTER JAMES REDFERN TURNER MOON-BRIGHT DREAMS by WILLIAM EDWARD ADAMS OUR WEAKNESS by JOHANNA AMBROSIUS |
