Subject(s): Cities; Urban Life

Far down the dark avenue of trees
He watched the swaying street lights
Nod, like old heads just falling off
To sleep. The roadway's muddy span
Was patched with puddles, while on the air
The frogs' croak from a distant Pond
Belabored solo crickets nearer by.

Had he not felt the impulse of a wet
Lone leaf fly past his tired cheek --
He might have thought he dreamed --
And that the unlit sky, was but
The cardboard cover, on a box of paper
Toys. . . .
