MADONNA, by FREDERIC ROWLAND MARVIN Poet's Biography First Line: Bare was the breast that cradled christ Last Line: Like starlight on the dead. Subject(s): Courts & Courtiers; Crowns | ||||||||
BARE was the breast that cradled Christ, Pierced for the great world's sake; She said: "If men forsake not sin, This wounded heart must break." Then down from Heaven a golden light In robes of music fell; A voice cried: "Thou art Queen of Heaven, But I am King of Hell." Seven silver flames her crown enclosed; Their pallid lights were shed Upon her face, to God upturned, Like starlight on the dead. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TO A MAID OF THIRTEEN by CHRISTOPHER BANNISTER FOR THE KING'S BIRTHDAY 1731 by COLLEY CIBBER A VISION OF THE GODS: HALOES, NOT HATS by JOHN CLOSE THE KING by SAMUEL VALENTINE COLE TWO CROWNS by OLIVER MURRAY EDWARDS AN ODE FOR THE NEW YEAR AS IT WAS SUNG BEFORE HIS MAJESTY by LAWRENCE EUSDEN FOR THE KING'S BIRTHDAY 1721 by LAWRENCE EUSDEN FOR THE KING'S BIRTHDAY 1723 by LAWRENCE EUSDEN SELIMUS: KINGS by ROBERT GREENE A MODERN PREACHER by FREDERIC ROWLAND MARVIN |
