SUNSET REVERENCE, by DOROTHEA PIERSON MCCLURE First Line: Gently the evening breeze dies down Last Line: With peace to end the dying day. Subject(s): Evening; Sunset; Twilight | ||||||||
Gently the evening breeze dies down; Clearly, sweetly does the angelus sound. Lo! the lowly peasants in the field Bow their heads and reverently kneel. The sunset clouds blaze and curl To reds and golds: like billowing sails unfurl. Night's shadows walk with unheard tread Across the sky-paths far ahead. Homeward face the weary toilers -- Men of the soil, these peasant toilers; From Nature's fields they wend their way, With peace to end the dying day. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...JOURNEY INTO THE EYE by DAVID LEHMAN FEBRUARY EVENING IN NEW YORK by DENISE LEVERTOV THE HOUSE OF DUST: 1 by CONRAD AIKEN TWILIGHT COMES by HAYDEN CARRUTH IN THE EVENINGS by LUCILLE CLIFTON NINETEEN FORTY by NORMAN DUBIE CONTRA MORTEM: THE FALL by HAYDEN CARRUTH |
