Can this be all of life, the dear desire Which, in the radiant days, a flaming light Served but to beckon, like a torch of fire, An ever future gift, a promise bright? How can I tell? -- I only know the rose Unfolds with royal splendor, day by day: -- The sunset with a richer beauty glows Than in the fleeting hours of pleasure's stay; And, with the gloaming, in the garden's heart Faint voices speak that never spoke before: This cannot well be all; -- it's just a part: And, garnered from the wealth of beauty's store, One jewel leads all the rest, that steadfast star Which sheds eternal loveliness afar! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 4 by MARK JARMAN QUIA ABSURDUM by ROBINSON JEFFERS GOING TO THE HORSE FLATS by ROBINSON JEFFERS SONNET TO FORTUNE by LUCY AIKEN JONATHAN EDWARDS IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS by ROBERT LOWELL RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION by MINA LOY WINTER'S MOON by FLORENCE MCCURDY IMAGINARY ANCESTORS: THE GIRAFFE WOMAN OF BURMA by MADELINE DEFREES |
