PRETENSE, by LOUISE MOSS MONTGOMERY First Line: There is no atheism. Men avow Last Line: And love itself is partially a prayer. Subject(s): Religion; Theology | ||||||||
There is no atheism. Men avow A disbelief their hearts can never feel. Faith in a God was planted on the brow Of Adam in the Garden, and the heel Of ruthless evolution cannot grind The thought of Him from out the creature's mind. He is a part of all our woe and weal. Despite his boast of self-sufficiency Man feels within his soul an urge to bow Before the Godhood and, instinctively, He turns him to his Maker. Hopes and fears Bespeak his limitations. Smiles and tears The Father's silent testimony bear And love itself is partially a prayer. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MYSTIC BOUNCE by TERRANCE HAYES MATHEMATICS CONSIDERED AS A VICE by ANTHONY HECHT UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE COMING OF THE PLAGUE by WELDON KEES A LITHUANIAN ELEGY by ROBERT KELLY APRIL by LOUISE MOSS MONTGOMERY |
