Subject(s): Flowers; Mortality; Roses

Fading petal of a dying rose!
From whence cometh the beauty of thy sorrowful pose?
With thee are the touches that good mother chose
To make us feel softly life's heaviest blows.
Oh, thou drooping, fading, dying, rosebeam,
Arise and alight with thy sweet-smelling gleam.
Life for you, rose, was one short, sweet, sweet dream.
Through thy breath and my breathing thou didst win esteem!

Good-bye, my rose, good-bye!
Though thou meetest thy death on the ground, thou art high.
Thou art high, while thy lowly death is nigh.
The wind bloweth past . . . a sigh! . . . Good-bye.
