Along the grass strange shadows play As earlier twilights, day by day, The waning year proclaim. In circling groups the blackbirds fly Like somber clouds, athwart a sky With sunset glow aflame. The goldenrod and asters gay Are broidered on the tapestry That covers hill and dale; Beside the road red sumac gleams; The falling leaves retard the streams, Or dance before the gale. The bare elms sweep the lowering clouds; The river mists, like clinging shrouds Hide all the valley's dreams; The wedging geese go winging by; We hear anon their guiding cry, While God the nearer seems. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...OUR AUTUMN by ELIZABETH AKERS ALLEN AN AUTUMN JOY by GEORGE ARNOLD A LEAF FALLS by MARION LOUISE BLISS THE FARMER'S BOY: AUTUMN by ROBERT BLOOMFIELD A LETTER IN OCTOBER by TED KOOSER AUTUMN EVENING by DAVID LEHMAN EVERYTHING THAT ACTS IS ACTUAL by DENISE LEVERTOV APPROACHING NIGHT by A.
