SHADOWS, by
First Line: White-capped waves and shimmering sands
Last Line: But shadows -- shadows -- come -- and go.
Subject(s): Earth; World

White-capped waves and shimmering sands
Sailboats dancing in the sun,
But on across the sea
The clouds are gathering
And planes are dropping bombs.

The wheat that ripened golden in the field is garnered in the bin.
The waving corn that whispered, whispered peace and plenty,
Stands waiting in a myriad row,
But in the world somewhere, somewhere,
The children starve and cry for bread.

On four-lane highways smooth as silver
The care-free millions swiftly glide,
While armies all accoutered
Sternly guard the distant frontiers
And nations wait -- for what -- for what --

The skies are sapphire blue and tranquil;
The dew-wet dawn renews the day;
The crescent moon hangs up her bow;
The heavens are constant and eternal
But shadows -- shadows -- come -- and go.
