ECLIPSES, by CHARLES FRANCIS RICHTER First Line: The sun went out in borneo Last Line: As hopeless as a distant star. Subject(s): Eclipses | ||||||||
The sun went out in Borneo Long before I began to see; The sun will blink out in Peru When not one bone remains of me; But even in my scanty time It will be more than I can do To watch eclipses of the sun In Borneo and in Peru. Not only stars are set beyond Everything but our vain desire; Not only are the years too short Before our stumbling spirits tire; But every instant flies too fast Before we catch the tang of it, Or hands and envious claws reach out To snatch away the precious bit. And ways, that open to our feet Without an obvious check or bar, Are in this crowded rush of time As hopeless as a distant star. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT by JOHN HOLLANDER THE LIGHTS IN THE SKY ARE STARS: BLOOD ON A DEAD WORLD by KENNETH REXROTH SEEING THE ECLIPSE IN MAINE by ROBERT BLY AT A LUNAR ECLIPSE by THOMAS HARDY THE DAVENPORT LUNAR ECLIPSE by JAMES HARRISON ON AN ECLIPSE OF THE MOON by WALTER SAVAGE LANDOR IN AN ECLIPSE by GRACE DENIO LITCHFIELD MOON SHADOW (AN ECLIPSE PICTURE) by LILIAN C.
