CONNECTICUT HILLS, by MINERVA WRIGHT ROCKWELL First Line: For countless centuries these hills have stood Last Line: Will sleep among these hills, to waken at their bidding. Subject(s): Mountains; Nature; Hills; Downs (great Britain) | ||||||||
For countless centuries these hills have stood Serene, in spite of season's changing. Full many a Winter's storm has beat upon Their heads, -- and Springtime's flooding rains Have gutted them in torture. The parching Suns of Summer drank greedily of their nurture, And Fall's cruel frosts their verdant beauty changed. And yet they've known the beauty of the Springtime; Have joined in wondering laughter at her humors; Felt whispering feet of rain upon their foreheads; Hearkened to seductive voice of Summer. When Fall has come to brush with wanton colors The hills, with lifted faces pale with bearing, Renew for a brief while a lovely knowing. Then, when Winter softly closes the door of rapture They sleep, -- full knowing that their wakening Will be the richer for their dreaming. So we, when seasons have fulfilled their mission Will sleep among these hills, to waken at their bidding. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CALIFORNIA SORROW: MOUNTAIN VIEW by MARY KINZIE CONTRA MORTEM: THE MOUNTAIN FASTNESS by HAYDEN CARRUTH GREEN MOUNTAIN IDYL by HAYDEN CARRUTH IF IT WERE NOT FOR YOU by HAYDEN CARRUTH GREATNESS by MINERVA WRIGHT ROCKWELL |
