PARADOX, by ELYDIA SHIPMAN First Line: Love had left her. The years Last Line: Which love's presence made it impossible to conceal. Subject(s): Love | ||||||||
Love had left her. The years Like the bones of aged men Had become dry and brittle; Yet a sweet, elusive fragrance Often came from out their mustiness. Then, as if were opening The door of a long-closed tomb, Love -- pregnant with promise, returned. Released, yet captive! She asked The cool silence of night to encompass her Lest prying eyes look upon the happiness Which love's presence made it impossible to conceal. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INVENTION OF LOVE by MATTHEA HARVEY TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS A LOVE FOR FOUR VOICES: HOMAGE TO FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN by ANTHONY HECHT AN OFFERING FOR PATRICIA by ANTHONY HECHT LATE AFTERNOON: THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE by ANTHONY HECHT A SWEETENING ALL AROUND ME AS IT FALLS by JANE HIRSHFIELD |
