PREFACE TO TEARS, by MAUDE BLIXT TRONE First Line: We make these solemn pledges, yet we know Last Line: That loving you is prefacing my tears. Subject(s): Love | ||||||||
We make these solemn pledges, yet we know Man's eager flesh has seldom been exempt From love's satiety; when hungers go Vows may become a burden of contempt. To keep us growing it may be the scheme To break our hearts and slay our every plan; Tormentingly this thought has stabbed my dream, -- Another woman, or another man. If through some miracle these pass us by, We cannot flout the truth that death will come Silencing our love song with a cry, One of us remaining dazed and numb. And yet I want you, knowing well these fears, That loving you is prefacing my tears. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE INVENTION OF LOVE by MATTHEA HARVEY TWO VIEWS OF BUSON by ROBERT HASS A LOVE FOR FOUR VOICES: HOMAGE TO FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN by ANTHONY HECHT AN OFFERING FOR PATRICIA by ANTHONY HECHT LATE AFTERNOON: THE ONSLAUGHT OF LOVE by ANTHONY HECHT A SWEETENING ALL AROUND ME AS IT FALLS by JANE HIRSHFIELD |
