HE WALKS WITH THESE: I AM THE VINE, by EVA WILLES WANGSGAARD Poet's Biography First Line: He led me from the halls where spirits flowed Last Line: The wise of earth have walked with a humble mien. | ||||||||
"I AM THE VINE" He led me from the halls where spirits flowed To quiet streets where cottages were dark, Save where a lighted wreath of holly glowed Or trees of love revived Judea's spark. He showed me joy upon a mother's face Was overlying seams of poverty, For weariness is gone from hands that place The smallest gift upon a Christmas tree. More love than mother love was in her eyes. More light than earth can give transformed the gloom. And while I looked I could but recognize That Holiness was present in that room. "I am the Vine," He said, "and there, a stem. My branches live in Me and I, in them." THE WISE OF EARTH He bade me sit and contemplate the world, Considering whom time had proved as wise. The darkeness lifted, flags of light unfurled, And sages walked before my reborn eyes. Confucius walked unchanged with common men, Regretting still the truths he did not know. As Buddha spoke with Socrates again, Their one concern was how to help and grow. The lasting words of wisdom they had spoken Became as candle flames to light the earth. Forgetting self, they walked where lives were broken And did not know nor ask what self is worth. Upon my heart was etched what I had seen: The wise of earth have walked with a humble mien. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SEARCH THE HEART by EVA WILLES WANGSGAARD WINTER WHEAT by EVA WILLES WANGSGAARD BOYHOOD FRIENDS by EDGAR LEE MASTERS THE SCARLET TANAGER by JOEL BENTON VLAMERTINGHE: PASSING THE CHATEAU, JULY 1917 by EDMUND CHARLES BLUNDEN FIREFLY; A SONG by ELIZABETH MADOX ROBERTS |
