SEARCH THE HEART, by EVA WILLES WANGSGAARD Poet's Biography First Line: It's strange that we, though centuries have passed Last Line: But they must search the heart on bended knees. | ||||||||
It's strange that we, though centuries have passed And should have brought us wisdom, somehow hold Our faith in useless verdicts often cast By glib majorities. Such counsel rolled The dungeon doors where saints were burned and racked And hurled the stones upon the prophet's head, Because their poor contemporaries lacked Acumen, disbelieving what they said. New worlds are found by men who walk alone, The heretics who challenge old belief. Upon their backs are wings of progress grown. We pay for them with coins of pain and grief. We walk erect in safe majorities, But they must search the heart on bended knees. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HE WALKS WITH THESE: I AM THE VINE by EVA WILLES WANGSGAARD WINTER WHEAT by EVA WILLES WANGSGAARD THE WOMEN WITH FABLED HAIR by MADELINE DEFREES THE COLOR SERGEANT by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON WINGED MAN by STEPHEN VINCENT BENET LEISURE by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES THE SCARE-FIRE by ROBERT HERRICK THE PRESENT CRISIS by JAMES RUSSELL LOWELL |
