I sat this night with death, Awaiting his toll of a life Full, rich encrusted through With service given. I felt that I should mourn; Yea, sad I was before the daylight came. But as the morning broke With tinted east The flowering apple and the sweet bird song -- Life's panorama spread before me. Night, the death of day, Is but the birth of dawn. So as death comes I shed no tears, I do not mourn. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
