THE HIGH COST OF LIVING', by AMOS RUSSEL WELLS Poet's Biography First Line: We love to read the magic tales of old Last Line: A newer knighthood braver than the past Subject(s): Past | ||||||||
Where knights courageous rescue ladies fair. Or brave a dragon in his horrid lair, Or face a giant confidently bold; But these, alas! are days of sordid gold, And what romance may bills of lading wear? What knighthood in the counting-room of care? What gallantry where things are bought and sold? Nay, blind and stupid! where the weaklings groan. The mighty mock, where privilege is massed. And poverty makes ineffectual moan. And chains of giant wrong are grimly fast. Are calls for courage man has never known, A newer knighthood braver than the past. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FERGUS FALLING by GALWAY KINNELL A TIME PAST by DENISE LEVERTOV LAST THINGS by WILLIAM MEREDITH CHRISTMAS TREE by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS THIS MORNING, GOD by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR A BATTLE SONG (WRITTEN IN THE WORLD WAR) by AMOS RUSSEL WELLS |
