Life has overtaken me and here I am; I fled before it as with courser's speed. My fancy pictured all that Life could give, I counted not that it brings only meed. Questing ever questing first, the while my goal Eluded me and rather seemed a doom. My youth sought beauty and I ranged at will, For every vagrant wayside bore a bloom. Plodding only plodding next, through life toward death, Yet Life pursued along that mystic road. I prayed for surcease for I had not learned That duty was my guerdon, not by load. Life has overtaken me and here I am; A mystic ebb and flow has borne me on; Soft breezes wafted and dark tempests tossed. A dead calm smote me, yet the port is won. Life has overtaken me and here I am; I shunned and fled but it pursued. My fancy blindly led a weary way, But Life has followed and I find it good. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...PRIVILEGE OF BEING by ROBERT HASS SEAWATER STIFFENS CLOTH by JANE HIRSHFIELD SAYING YES TO LIVING by DAVID IGNATOW THE WORLD IS SO DIFFICULT TO GIVE UP by DAVID IGNATOW A DAKOTA IDYL by FANNIE BARRIER WILLIAMS |
