A little joy, a little pain,
A little sunshine shot with rain;
A little laughter, bitter tears,
Small success, and wanton fears;
Constant labors, little rest,
A little love by mercy blest—
Ah, such is life!

Ah, such is life!
A little worry, then surcease,
A little sorrow, little peace;
A little gladness mixed with grief,
Heavy burdens, sweet relief;
Endless toilings, bitter strife,
Bitter-sweet—such, such is life—
Ah, such is life!
