THE WHITE CANE, by GLENN WARD DRESBACH First Line: He jostled her a little in the crowd Last Line: "the last I saw was stars at meuse-argonne!" Subject(s): Stars | ||||||||
He jostled her a little in the crowd, And she had said, "Look out where you are going!" She had not meant her voice to be so loud, And she had seen the white cane, without knowing Its meaning ... He replied, "I wish I could --" And she looked up to find his face was drawn With sudden pain, and then she understood -- "The last I saw was stars at Meuse-Argonne!" She could not think of anything to say, Shame gripped her throat and would not let her speak; She bowed her head and hurried on her way -- When she had kissed him softly on the cheek. And when she sees a white cane she will know Its meaning -- lost horizons, vanished dawn -- And hear a voice, deliberate and slow -- "The last I saw was stars at Meuse-Argonne!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE EPIC STARS by ROBINSON JEFFERS HYMN TO THE STARS by GEORGE LAWRENCE ANDREWS CHRISTMAS TREE by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS CLEMATIS MONTANA by MADELINE DEFREES THE UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE by JAMES GALVIN TO SEE THE STARS IN DAYLIGHT by JAMES GALVIN |
