THE WATCH BY NIGHT, by EMMA LEE GLENN First Line: Centurion, centurion Last Line: Could keep immanuel from his throne. Subject(s): Guard Duty; Watchmen | ||||||||
Centurion, Centurion, Pray tell us what you guarded there; "I guarded well a wrapped form With pallid face and shining hair." Centurion, Centurion, Now tell us what did Romans say When in the early morning light They found the stone rolled away; All through the watches of the night My lonely vigil well I kept And then they said, "Disciples came And stole His body while I slept." Centurion, Centurion, What wot you of that sealed stone? Oh, then I knew nor kings nor priests Could keep Immanuel from His throne. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...OFAY-WATCHER LOOKS BACK by MONGANE WALLY SEROTE DOLLY IN THE RAIN by RAY CLARKE ROSE THE WATCHMAN by MARGARET SACKVILLE A WATCH IN THE NIGHT by ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE NIGHT WATCHMAN OF PONT-AU-CHANGE by ROBERT DESNOS EARTH AND SEA by BRENDAN KENNELLY |
