JUST AVERAGE, by
First Line: He reads the paper riding down to work
Last Line: Must be the man he dreamed but could not be.

He reads the paper riding down to work;
His lunch divides an energetic day;
But tantalizing visions often lurk
Where columned figures dance and go astray.
The legends known in boyhood, dearly loved --
Of pioneering grandsires and their kind --
Grow pale with humdrum years. His hopes are shoved
Into a darkened closet of the mind.

Though he may jest, the ancient brain and brawn
Reddens his blood today. Grinning at Fate
He grapples valiantly a glowering dawn,
Throws the lugubrious hour to rise elate:
Because a prattling child beside his knee,
Must be the man he dreamed but could not be.
