TO A SOLDIER FRIEND, by KATHERINE DONOVAN MACKINNON Poet's Biography First Line: You go not forth alone, with single power Last Line: And follow you unchallenged, unafraid. Subject(s): Soldiers; Wellesley College | ||||||||
YOU go not forth alone, with single power: I shall be with you, sharing all your days, The thrill of loneliness, the warmth of praise, The triumph of each bold, exalting hour. I shall stand near, through steadfast vigil long, Face untamed wide-flung fires, bright with death, Night-shattering; and await the healing breath Of vivid morning, and the lark's rare song. My soul shall seek the shadow of your fears, The burden of unspoken agony, The fiery brand of pain's deep-searing blade, And share your glory of eternal years -- Transcend Death's paltry bars rejoicing, free, And follow you unchallenged, unafraid. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LINES WRITTEN TO A TRANSLATOR OF GREEK POETRY by MARGARET STEELE ANDERSON THE LESSER BEAUTY by MARGARET STEELE ANDERSON WORK by MARGARET STEELE ANDERSON IN MEMORY: MISS JEWETT by GRACE ALLERTON ANDREWS HERE ENTER NOT by KATHARINE CANBY BALDERSTON I CLEANED MY HOUSE TODAY by KATHARINE CANBY BALDERSTON MY GARDEN by KATHARINE CANBY BALDERSTON THE LOST SHEEP by SARAH PRATT MCCLAIN GREENE |
