HOLINESS, by RALPH W. WESTCOTT First Line: Now am I glad, after the accurate day Last Line: Of her pure body -- her soul's paradise. Subject(s): Yale University | ||||||||
Now am I glad, after the accurate day Has brightened into certainty some shades Of doubt, that, as among those moon-washed glades We wandered yesterday, I kept at bay The Adam-impulse that scarce brooked delay; Nor made complaint when, like an hundred blades Of steel, desire stabbed my soul! Day fades Again to dark. Now memory, I pray! Hark back the spell that calmed my broken sighs: -- The shadow-softened glory of her face Purer than Artemis'. She breathed round me Aromas that wrapped sense in ecstasy So high, it was most holy -- from the grace Of her pure body -- her soul's paradise. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BALLADE OF MYSELF AND MONSIEUR RABELAIS by LEONARD BACON (1887-1954) THE BALLADE OF THE GOLDEN HORN by LEONARD BACON (1887-1954) DEATH AND THE MONK by ARTHUR E.
