SUMMER DAY AT THE DESERTED HOUSE, by BERTYE YOUNG WILLIAMS Poet's Biography First Line: Rose petals fall Last Line: Before the night comes on!) Alternate Author Name(s): Williams, B. Y. Subject(s): Houses, Deserted | ||||||||
Rose petals fall Unheeded by the door; Slow sunbeams crawl Along the dusty floor. The uncurtained panes, Like old and tragic eyes, View what remains With unconcerned surprise. The river gleams Pale silver far below. (What were their dreams Who dwelt here long ago?) They say -- but oh, What matters what "they say!" The long ago Is very far away. What sways the swing Beneath the cedar trees? Do small hands cling -- No, no it was the breeze. What was that sound? A footfall on the stair? Look not around -- No one, no one is there. The sunset glow Fades -- soon it will be gone -- (Come let us go Before the night comes on!) | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BEYOND THE HUNTING WOODS by DONALD JUSTICE RUINS UNDER THE STARS by GALWAY KINNELL ABANDONED FARMHOUSE by TED KOOSER NORTH OF ALLIANCE by TED KOOSER BLUE SUNDAY by KENNETH REXROTH THE MIRROR IN THE WOODS by KENNETH REXROTH THE DESERTED HOUSE by MARY ELIZABETH COLERIDGE THE DESERTED HOUSE by ALFRED TENNYSON CANYON OF THE YELLOWSTONE by BERTYE YOUNG WILLIAMS |
