Last Line: Far off.
Subject(s): Old Age; Wellesley College

I HEAR an old man's voice
Talking, talking
Far off.
It sounds like a brook
Murmuring over stones
As it winds in and out
Among meadow grasses
Where bees are humming.
On and on the brook goes.
I kneel down at its edge
Listening,
Listening
To the dreamy sound.
The brook goes on
Across the meadow wide
Until it reaches two high rocks
Between which it slips out of sight
To a land I cannot see.

I hear an old man's voice
Talking, talking
Far off.
