NEW ENGLAND MOTHER-IN-LAW, by
First Line: Upon the windows of her caged-in life
Last Line: That put it off until this hour -- articulate, too late.
Subject(s): Mothers-in-law

Upon the windows of her caged-in life
She wrote with diamond-edged heart
That all who after her inherited
Might know beforehand her futility
And thus avoid its snare.
Some called her cynical, unkind, uncaring
Who knew not what it cost her -- this unbaring.
This hard air hid a tortured tenderness,
This lack of contact only fed the fire
That burned unaltered in her heart's desire
For human intercourse with other kindred kind.
And only I who sensed it, might have interpreted
Had I not Youth's hard carelessness, unknowing,
That put it off until this hour -- articulate, too late.
