NEW ENGLAND MOTHER-IN-LAW, by FRANCES FUERST QUICK First Line: Upon the windows of her caged-in life Last Line: That put it off until this hour -- articulate, too late. Subject(s): Mothers-in-law | |||
Upon the windows of her caged-in life She wrote with diamond-edged heart That all who after her inherited Might know beforehand her futility And thus avoid its snare. Some called her cynical, unkind, uncaring Who knew not what it cost her -- this unbaring. This hard air hid a tortured tenderness, This lack of contact only fed the fire That burned unaltered in her heart's desire For human intercourse with other kindred kind. And only I who sensed it, might have interpreted Had I not Youth's hard carelessness, unknowing, That put it off until this hour -- articulate, too late. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TO MY MOTHER by EDGAR ALLAN POE OVER THE WAY by MARY ELIZABETH MAPES DODGE THE BROKEN HEART by JAMES HOGG THE WIDOW TO HER SON'S BETROTHED by CAROLINE ELIZABETH SARAH SHERIDAN NORTON HIS MOTHER-IN-LAW by WALTER PARKE MOTHERS-IN-LAW by JOHN GODFREY SAXE SUCKING CIDER THROUGH A STRAW by ANONYMOUS FIRST MEETING WITH A POSSIBLE MOTHER-IN-LAW by THOMSON WILLIAM GUNN |
